The HC Ludwigsburg is a traditional hockey and tennis club from Ludwigsburg 12km north of Stuttgart . The club became known in the 60s in men's hockey through two finals for the German championship and as a founding member of both the field hockey league in 1969 and the indoor hockey league in 1972. 17 members founded the club on March 23, 1912 under the name hockey friendship association , changed but soon changed the name to 1. Hockey Club Ludwigsburg . The first game against the Kraftsportverein Stuttgart ended 0-0 on May 17, 1912.
After the First World War , the club had to join VfB Ludwigsburg due to a lack of space , tried again in 1921 under the name RSV Ludwigsburg , only to become part of VfB again in 1924. In 1932 there was the first game of a women's team, which the guest, Eintracht Stuttgart, clearly won 5-0, but the team had to split up again in 1934 due to a lack of players. Since 1938, championship games have been introduced by the Württemberg Association and friendly games have taken a back seat. In 1938 the VfB Ludwigsburg merged with the RKV Ludwigsburg to form the sports association 07 Ludwigsburg . In 1949 the hockey department left the main club and chose the name Hockeyclub Ludwigsburg in 1912.

In 1952, the first men became Wuerttemberg field champions for the first time in the final against TSG Ulm . Up to the founding of the German field league in 1969, 13 further Württemberg field championships and a South German championship in 1964 were to follow. In the subsequent games for the German championship they were eliminated in the first game against the eleven-time Bavarian champions HC Wacker Munich with 0: 3 goals. The men achieved their greatest success in the field in 1962 when they took part in the final of the German Hockey Championship. In front of their own audience they had to admit defeat to the Berlin HC 0: 3.
In 1968 HC Ludwigsburg was again in a final for the German championship. This time HG Nürnberg was the opponent in the hall, who got the upper hand with 9: 6. A year later, the HCL qualified for the newly founded field hockey Bundesliga by winning the Württemberg field championship. The men were also founding members of the indoor hockey league in 1969, again with the title of Württemberg champion in the final against Ulm.
In 1977 the HCL had to say goodbye to the Bundesliga both in the field and in the hall. 1985 then even the relegation from the regional league to the upper league took place. It was not until 1997 that the indoor team, after 13 long years in the major league, was promoted to the 2nd Regionalliga-Süd, then in 1999 on the field, the leap from the 2nd Regionalliga Süd to the 1st Regionalliga Süd. In 2001 the men had to leave the 1st Regionalliga-Süd both in the field and in the hall.
In 2007/2008 the 1st men's team of HC Ludwigsburg played 2nd field hockey Bundesliga , the 2nd men in the 1st association league and the 3rd men in the 3rd association league. The HCL is also represented in the 2nd Bundesliga in indoor hockey. The team consists mainly of players from their own youth, such as B. Severin Schmidt, Michael Josek or Arne Huber together. The club reaped the fruits of years of youth work with the German runner-up for the A boys in the 2007/2008 indoor season and third place in the 2009/2010 DM for male youth B. At the end of 2007, the HCL had around 500 members, around half under 18 years.

In 1954 the women won the Württemberg field championship for the first time, but lost in the first round of the German championship with 1: 2 against the Hessen champions Eintracht Wiesbaden. Indoor championships were held for the first time in Württemberg in the winter of 1955/1956. The women won the title straight away.
As a promoter from the Oberliga to the Regionalliga Süd in 1990, the women of the HCL qualified for the promotion round to the Bundesliga, but failed after winning the semi-finals (3: 1 against TSV Ludwigsburg ) in the final against the Zehlendorfer Wespen with 1: 3. Four years later, the first place in the Regionalliga Süd was achieved again. This time the team failed in the Bundesliga promotion round but already in the semifinals.
At the moment there is only one women's team and six women's youth teams on the field. In the hall the women's team plays in the 2nd regional league, on the field in the upper league.
Club facility
For the 50th anniversary of the club in 1962, today's club complex on Fuchshofstrasse in the east of Ludwigsburg was put into operation with a hard court and a grass pitch. A clubhouse was built on the free east side in 1968, whereby 50% of the costs were covered by the members themselves. In 1979, the wishes of many club members were fulfilled with the construction of three tennis courts. Finally, in 1984, the club received an artificial turf hockey field on its premises .
Others
The later CDU politician and lobbyist Matthias Wissmann (born 1949) played for HC Ludwigsburg until 1974.
