The hockey department was established on March 22, 1922. On June 10, 1922, the men's team of TG Frankenthal played their first match against their eternal rival Dürkheimer HC . At the end of the 1930s, the team played in the top German division. Rudi Weyland was appointed to the national team, but did not make the leap into the silver medal winning team at the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin. Today (2017/18) the men of TG Frankenthal play on the field and in the hall in the 2nd Bundesliga.

The club is one of the most successful national hockey clubs in Germany in the field of men's hockey. Even today, the TG Frankenthal occupies second place in the list of the best indoor champions with seven titles. The win of five indoor titles in a row (1980–1984) is unique. With a total of ten German championships , the club is in fourth place in the German championships in men's hockey, only HTC Uhlenhorst Mülheim (17), Rot-Weiß Köln (15) and Berliner HC (12) won more national titles in men's hockey. In addition to the ten championship titles, the team was also able to win four runner-up championships. The guarantee of success during the 15 golden years of the TGF was the 213-time national player and 1972 Olympic champion Peter Trump . In the national press the team was dubbed “TG Trump”, especially since he also acted as a player-coach at times. But the long-time coach Giovanni Vicca, department head Helmut Müller and team manager Friedrich Götzelmann also shaped the success story of the team, which celebrated its biggest victory by winning the European Cup in 1984.

Women's hockey has been played in Frankenthal since the 1920s. After winning the zone championship in the French occupation zone in 1947 and the southwest championship in 1950, the women played for the German championship at the beginning of the 1960s. They belonged to the four best German club teams. The player Karola Scherer was appointed to the national team in 1964. Currently (2019/20) the first women's team plays in the field in the Regionalliga Süd and in the hall in the 2nd Regionalliga Süd.

The first indoor championship in 1969 came as a surprise, as the team did not have a suitable hockey hall at home to prepare for the final round. In 1980 and 1983 TG Frankenthal achieved the double , the championship in the hall and in the field within one calendar year. The greatest public interest in Frankenthal was in the final round in 1980. The games were sold out weeks before, 1,800 spectators saw the encounters in the completely overcrowded "Sporthalle Am Kanal" with a dramatic final against local rivals HC Heidelberg. The three final games in the field in what was then the "Stadion an der Benderstraße" were each attended by around 3,000 spectators. That was a considerable interest by hockey standards. Frankenthal hockey players have been awarded the “silver hockey ball” for the best player in the final tournament several times.
