history

former Hellkrug, also a restaurant today
Friedrichsthal hunting lodge

In 1722 the landlord Joachim Meyer was allowed to build an inn called "Hellkrug" on the road from Lankow in the direction of Gadebusch , the successor building of which has been preserved to this day and is still used for gastronomic purposes. The name at that time goes back to the name of a Hellborn pond in the immediate vicinity. The Hellkrug and its surroundings enjoyed growing popularity. A forge was built in the immediate vicinity by the son of the pitcher operator in 1746. In 1790, Government Councilor August Georg von Brandenstein leased the Hellkrug for 24 years. He bought land west of the Kruges and built a summer house there in 1790 in the form of a simple half-timbered building. This building was acquired in 1797 by Grand Duke Friedrich Franz I , who converted it into a hunting lodge in view of the wild environment . It was also Friedrich Franz I who gave Friedrichsthal his name on October 5, 1798. The palace complex was expanded in 1798 by two side wings and later by the two cavalier houses , which are opposite the palace on the other side of the street, for Jägermeister and Meute as well as stables. In 1805 the main building was increased by one floor. In the castle there was a printed wallpaper from Paris from the years 1814/15, on which hunting scenes are depicted and which has been in the Friedrichsmoor hunting castle since 1964 .

The jug building, which was ailing at the time, was rebuilt in 1799/1800. With the expansion of Schwerin in the direction of Lankow, the elongated village street became a Chaussee , on which villas were first built in Lankow and later in Friedrichsthal and numerous larches were planted on the sides .

Railway line in the Friedrichsthaler Forest

The hunting lodge was rarely used by the Grand Duke and was therefore made available to associations and citizens. Efforts in the following years to sell the castle fizzled out. In 1914 soldiers in need of rest were accommodated here.

At the beginning of the 20th century, new country houses, inns, cottages and pensions were built. As a climatic health resort, Friedrichsthal was a popular destination for the Schwerin people. This is particularly evident in the creation of the Friedrichsthaler train station and the former excursion restaurant opposite. There was a previous ducal railway stop in the extension of the garden path in the forest. The population rose from 40 to 155 from 1875 to 1933. The incorporation to Schwerin took place in 1936. From 1928 the former Hellkrug functioned as a hotel, after 1943 as a nurses' home after a hospital was established in the hunting lodge. During the Nazi era, the hunting lodge was used by the SA, they built a large boathouse with a bathing establishment in the sea bay by the forest gorge; the boathouse was still standing in the early 1960s. Due to the meter-high fluctuations in the water level of the lake, the pile dwellings of these facilities fell into disrepair. The restaurant at the Jagdschloss was reopened in 1951, after renovation work it opened in 1961 as the Waldblick consumer restaurant . The hunting lodge functioned as a tuberculosis sanatorium from 1945 and ultimately as a retirement home until the fall of the Berlin Wall . The building, which had been vacant since 1993 and now in need of renovation, was sold at the end of 2010 to a Berlin investor who, among other things, was planning a café there.

From 1994 a new residential area was built in the district. This attempted, among other things, to keep Schwerin residents who might have fled the city within the city limits. In the 2000s, the first infrastructural facilities such as a kindergarten, the office of the local council and a supermarket were built.
