The Neumühler See is an elongated, narrow, mesotrophic lake in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania , which was created by glaciers during the Ice Age . The majority of the water is located in the western part of the city of Schwerin , with the exception of the northwestern tip, which belongs to the municipality of Brüsewitz .
description
It is named after the lost mill on the south bank of the lake, first mentioned in 1357 and 1362 , after which today's Schwerin district of Neumühle , located on the south-east bank, is named.
The Neumühler See is 3.1 kilometers long and only a maximum of 410 meters wide. The shore length is about 14 kilometers, the average water depth 7.9 meters. The above-ground catchment area is 18 km², most of the water is fed by groundwater. The bank is mostly wooded and steep. The lake is the habitat of otters, is an FFH area ( Fauna-Flora-Habitat Directive ) and belongs to the European Natura 2000 system of protected areas, parts of the bank areas are legally protected biotopes .
Until 1989, drinking water was taken from the lake ( water tower Schwerin-Neumühle ). Due to a greater biological load and higher demands on the drinking water, this is now only obtained from deep wells on the shore region. In the past, the withdrawal of drinking water caused water level fluctuations of up to 3.5 meters and led to a decrease in the water area from 211 (1913) to 171 hectares (1998). By building another waterworks in 1954 and a weir in 1990, the water level of the lake was stabilized.
Flora and fauna
There are alder and willow quarries around the lake . Since there are only small areas of shallow water and the water level has fluctuated greatly in the past, there are only narrow strips of reed beds and floating leaves.
In 1996, 32 breeding and 29 guest bird species, including the osprey and the otter, were identified in the area of the lake . Common fish are perch , lead , eel , pike , whitefish and roach
