The Grimkesee is a eutrophic and shallow lake southwest of Schwerin city ​​center. There is an allotment garden on the north bank, to which the "Old Cemetery" is attached. The water is difficult to access due to fences and a boggy alder forest belt. The Grimkesee was privately owned until the 1960s and is now one of the legally protected biotopes .

Flora and fauna

The Grimkesee has an extensive silting zone , which is overgrown with alder forest and shrubbery, which is followed by wet meadows on alkaline fens. Underwater lawns, water lilies , reeds and sedges occur in the water .

A total of 299 plant species, 21 of which are on the country's Red List , eight amphibian species , grass snake and sand lizard , 99 bird species, including the kingfisher , 22 dragonfly and 436 butterfly species have been identified in the area of ​​the water .
