The Burgsee is located in the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania state capital Schwerin directly at Schwerin Castle . As a bay of the Schwerin Inner Lake to the east, it is separated from it by the castle island and two bridges. It has an area of 11 hectares. Originally it had two tributaries, namely the Seeke connecting the Ostorfer See with the Schweriner See (today under the Platz der Jugend ) and the Fließgraben (today under the Mecklenburgstrasse ) from the Pfaffenteich ; the Seeke was diverted parallel to the west bank in the early modern period in order to supply the river ditch as part of the western city fortifications with water.

The lake contains polluted sediments, the subsoil consists of one to two meter thick layers of peat, up to 14 meters thick muds , embankment material, sand and gravel. Some bank areas have been worked on several times in the recent past. The reed beds and willow bushes near the banks are protected by law.

Up until the 1920s, part of the lake was filled with household waste, and from 1968 to 1980 with rubble, especially the blasted eastern old town ( Großer Moor construction area ).

Flora and fauna

In the area of the Burgsee there are several species of bats that sleep in the castle. Traces of the otter have been documented. In addition, 13 species of dragonflies, 22 species of fish, four species of amphibians and 70 species of birds were observed.

On the occasion of the Federal Garden Show 2009 , the Burgsee was redesigned for around 23 million euros. From April to August 2007, the previously 8.7 hectare lake was expanded to 11.1 hectares in a southerly direction by dredging. In the process, contaminated sites were removed and, among other things, sunk bombs, high explosive shells and steel helmets from the time of the Second World War were found. A fleece was then laid on the 1.75 meter deep lake floor and gravel was poured in, resulting in a water depth of around 1.50 meters in the extended part. The “floating meadow”, an only seemingly floating island, was installed on the newly created water area, which was an attraction at the BUGA. The BUND had sued against the enlargement. With the comparison of keeping bushes and reed beds on the western part of the area, the extension was finally approved.
