Mudde is the collective term for sediments that are deposited in lakes and that contain a significant amount of organic matter (more than 5 percent by mass). Colloquially, Mudden is usually referred to as lake mud .
The organic material in the Mudde is subject to different processes of putrefaction , i. H. anaerobic conditions prevail in the sedimentation environment .
According to the composition, two groups are distinguished:
- organic (more than 30% organic matter): Lebermudde (from algae), peat mud and detritus mud
- organo-mineral (5 to 30% organic matter): sand , silt , clay , diatoms and lime sludge
The Mudden include Dy , Gyttja and Sapropel .
