Both lakes are connected by a ditch and were classified as polytrophic in 1997 . The water level of the Upper Lake is 39.8 m above sea level. 30 cm above sea level above the Lower Lake. Parts of the bank areas belong to the legally protected biotopes .
The Siebendörfer Moor on the southwestern city limits has been drained into the Lower Ostorfer See via the Herrengraben since the 1930s. In this context the water level of the lake was lowered by 35 centimeters.
