Katja Johanna Alice Nyberg (born August 24, 1979 in Stockholm , Sweden ) is a former Norwegian handball player . The 1.83 m tall player played in the left backcourt . In 1997, 1998 and 1999 she was voted handball player of the year in Finland.

Personal

She is the daughter of Robert Nyberg , the first Finnish handball professional to play abroad. Born in Stockholm, Finland grew up in Finland and became a Norwegian citizen in January 2001. Nyberg had a relationship with the Norwegian handball player Gro Hammerseng-Edin between 2005 and 2010 .

Career

Nyberg, a former Finnish junior javelin champion, started at the age of ten at Sparta IF, which her father trained. In 1997 she moved to the Swedish club Stockholmspolisens IF , for which she played for a year. She was then committed by the Norwegian top club Larvik HK , with whom she was able to win a total of eleven titles. After playing for the Slovenian club Krim Ljubljana in 2005 , she moved to the Danish club FC Midtjylland Håndbold (former club name: Ikast-Bording Elite Håndbold) the following year . From summer 2010 Nyberg went back on the hunt for goals for Larvik HK. After the 2011/12 season, she ended her career. Then she took over a coaching position in the youth division of Larvik. From January 2019 until the end of the 2018/19 season, she coached the Norwegian first division club Gjerpen HK.

She made her international debut for the Norwegian national team on March 23, 2001 against France . Nyberg played 99 international matches, in which she scored 321 goals. The greatest successes were winning the European Championships in 2004 and 2006, the gold medal at the Olympic Games in 2008 , as well as being voted the most valuable player at the 2007 World Cup .
