Gro Hammerseng-Edin (born April 10, 1980 in Gjøvik ; born Gro Hammerseng ) is a former Norwegian handball player . She played in the backcourt , where she was mainly used on the backcourt middle position. She was voted World Handball Player of the Year 2007.

Career

In the club

Hammerseng-Edin started playing handball in Gjøvik at the age of ten. At first she played for Gjøvik HK, Raufoss IL and Vardal IF. From the 1997/98 season she was active with Gjøvik og Vardal HK in the highest Norwegian league. In the 2002/03 season, the backcourt player scored 139 goals in 24 games, placing them seventh on the list of goalscorers.

In 2003 Hammerseng-Edin signed a contract with the Danish first division club Ikast-Bording Elite Håndbold (since the end of 2008 FC Midtjylland Håndbold ). With Ikast she was vice cup winner in the first season and took third place in the Danish league. In addition, Ikast won the European Cup Winners' Cup that same season . In the second final against Hypo Niederösterreich , she made a decisive contribution to the success of her team with eight goals. In 2005 she was voted the best playmaker in the Danish league. In 2008 she reached the final of the Danish championship with Ikast, but failed there at Viborg HK .

In the summer of 2010, Hammerseng-Edin moved to the Norwegian club Larvik HK . After Hammerseng-Edin won the championship in her first season with Larvik, she paused the following season due to pregnancy. It was not until the 2012/13 season that she returned to the Larvik squad. She won the championship again in 2013 and was also in the final of the Champions League. She ended her career after the 2016/17 season.

In the national team

Gro Hammerseng-Edin ran a total of fifteen times for the Norwegian youth selection and eleven times for the junior selection. At the European Junior Championships in 1997, she finished second with Norway.

Hammerseng-Edin made her debut for the Norwegian national team on November 29, 2000 . In the same year she finished sixth with Norway at the European Championships in Romania. In the two subsequent tournaments, the 2001 World Cup and the European Championship , she won the runner-up title. Before the 2003 World Cup , in which Norway finished sixth, she took over the office of team captain.

At the 2004 European Championships , the Norwegian won her first title with the national team. In addition, she was named MVP of this EM. A year later, Hammerseng was unable to take part in the World Cup due to a cruciate ligament injury . After her injury, she returned to the national team in August 2006. Only a few months later she managed to defend the European Championship and the MVP title at the 2006 European Championship.

Hammerseng-Edin moved into the final of the 2007 World Cup with the Norwegian selection, but lost to Russia there . Hammerseng-Edin took part in the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. Norway met Russia again in the final, but this time the Scandinavians won the gold medal. The next big tournament in which Hammerseng-Edin took part was the 2010 European Championship , which the Northern Europeans again won. After this tournament Hammerseng-Edin did not play a single international match. In March 2013, she officially ended her international career.

Private

Gro has two brothers, Lars and Morten. Lars plays at the Lillehammer ice hockey club and Morten is the singer of the band Babylotion . She also has a younger sister. Gro lived openly in a relationship with her Norwegian teammate Katja Nyberg until 2010 . Anja Hammerseng-Edin has been her new partner since October 2010 . In August 2011, her pregnancy was announced. She gave birth to a son in February 2012. The couple got married in August 2013 . She gave birth to another son in August 2018.

At the end of 2012 she announced that she would be writing a book with her partner Anja Edin.
