Hansen made his debut in the Danish national team on June 5, 2007, for which his father Flemming Hansen was also active. The backcourt player only traveled to the 2008 Olympic Games as a reservist and moved to the Danish squad after Michael V. Knudsen lost due to illness . In the group game against Russia, he scored the decisive 25:24 winner with a direct free throw in the last second.

At the 2011 World Cup , Hansen finished second with the Danish selection. With 68 goals, he became the tournament's top scorer and was appointed to the All-Star team. In that year he was also elected world handball player. In 2012 he triumphed with Denmark at the European Championships . Here, too, belonged to the All-Star team as the best left backcourt player. In the summer he retired from the Olympic Games in London with the Danish team in the quarter-finals. At the 2013 World Cup , he and his team were once again named vice world champion and best player . At the 2014 European Championships in his own country, he was elected Vice-European Champion and also elected to the All-Star Team. At the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro , he won the gold medal and was called back to the All-Star Team and also named best player. At the 2019 World Cup , Hansen won the world title with Denmark. With 72 hits, he took first place in the list of goalscorers and was also elected MVP.
