The world handball player of the year has been voted annually since 1988 by the readers of the magazine World Handball Magazine , which is published by the International Handball Federation (IHF).

There were no elections in 1991, 1992 and 1993. There was no choice for 2017 either.

The Swede Magnus Wislander (including THW Kiel ) was elected world handball player of the 20th century in 2000.
