history

The handball department did not come into being until 1940. In 1980 the women's department of Byåsen first caused a sensation when they surprisingly moved into the Norwegian cup final as a third division team. Two years later, the team rose for the first time in the Norwegian elite series; after another year in the second division in the 1983/84 season, the club then established itself in the highest Norwegian league. In 1987 the club won its first championship, and four more have followed since then. However, Byåsen never managed to win a European Cup.

In the new millennium Byåsen fell more and more behind Larvik HK . From 2004 to 2013 the team was always runner-up.
