Lie, who starts for the Byåsen IL club , competed in his first World Cup competition on December 3, 1995 in Lillehammer . He finished jumping on the large hill in 36th place and just barely missed the points. He was also unsuccessful in the following World Cups and was not able to collect his first World Cup points until February 8, 1997 while skiing on the Kulm . After he came in 14th place in the first ski flying, he finished the second flying in 9th place. At the Nordic World Ski Championships 1997 in Trondheim , which took place two weeks later , he was able to achieve 28th place on the normal hill and 9th place on the large hill. In the team competition he achieved 5th place together with Roar Ljøkelsøy , Espen Bredesen and Lasse Ottesen . Just a week after the World Championship, he was able to climb onto the podium with the team in Lahti for the first time and finished the jumping in 3rd place. Following this success, he was able to achieve several top 10 placements in the World Cup and ended the 1996/97 World Cup season in 28th place in the overall standings. At the Norwegian Championships in 1997 in Mo i Rana , he won the bronze medal on the large hill behind Lasse Ottesen and Espen Bredesen. The following World Cup season 1997/98 was not as successful as the previous season. So he could only jump into the points two times. After the season he therefore took a break from international competitions for two years. At the Norwegian Championships in 1998, however, he was able to win the gold medal in the team competition on the large hill in Trondheim.
After a two-year break from competition, Lie contested another World Cup on March 4, 2000 in Lahti and only narrowly failed in the points with 31st place. Only in the 2000/01 World Cup season he was able to achieve another point in ski flying in Harrachov and finished jumping in 29th place. At the end of the season in Trondheim, he was even able to jump into the top 20 again with 19th place. Despite this, he was transferred to the Continental Cup (COC) for the 2001/02 season . His best place he could achieve here was a 5th place on the large hill in Planica on January 12, 2003. At national level, Lie won the Norges Cup in 2002/03. However, after no successes in the Continental Cup either and he had no points in World Cup competitions for which he had been nominated in the meantime, he ended his active ski jumping career after jumping in Braunlage on January 25, 2004.
He currently looks after the elite team of Team Trønderhopp in Trondheim as an assistant trainer.
