Synagogue in Korb

The synagogue in Korb , a district of Möckmühl in the district of Heilbronn in northern Baden-Württemberg , was on the top floor of a building erected in 1824 at Sennfelder Strasse 4. The building and the remains of the synagogue's interior cladding have been preserved.

history

A Jewish community in Korb had existed since the 18th century and in 1828 numbered 90 people. In 1824 a building was erected at Sennfelder Strasse 4 with a synagogue in the roof, a school building in the basement, an apartment for the prayer leader and a mikveh (ritual immersion bath), which was moved from the back of the house to the area to the left of the entrance in 1851.

In 1832 the congregation became a branch of the Jewish congregation in Olnhausen within the Berlichingen district rabbinate , whereupon services were initially no longer held in Korb. Since the way to the church service in Olnhausen was difficult, the congregation was again given permission in 1835 to hold its own church services with its own prayer leader, who was also a Jewish teacher. In 1866 the building was renovated.

Due to the sharp decline in the size of the community as a result of emigration and emigration from the middle of the 19th century, the Jewish community , which last had only a few people and was subordinate to the District Rabbinate Merchingen , was dissolved in 1903, which also ended the services in the building. The remaining Jews in Korb attended the service in Sennfeld in future . The synagogue building was last owned by the Jewish Rosenfeld family, with whom the last Jews left the place in 1926.

The building was still used for residential purposes, remains of the painted interior cladding of the synagogue with gold stars on a blue background have been preserved in the attic.
