Former synagogue at Fahrgasse 14 (March 2009)

The synagogue in Oedheim in the district of Heilbronn in northern Baden-Württemberg was built in 1864 by the Jewish community of Oedheim . The house was sold in 1938 after the dissolution of the Jewish community , changed hands several times and was finally converted into a private house in 1966.

history

The first synagogue in Oedheim was in the 18th century in the house of the Jew Moses and his son Emanuel near the local church. After Emanuel's death, the community of Oedheim tried to sell the building to non-Jews in 1737, as there had been various displeasures due to the proximity of the building to the church. However, there was no sale, so the building continued to serve as a synagogue. In 1827 there was a synagogue and mikveh (ritual immersion bath) in the house of Lazarus Stern in the garden of the Bautzenschloss . In 1846 the Jewish community bought a building at Fahrgasse 14 and set up the synagogue there. In 1864 a new synagogue was built on the site of the old building, which was in danger of collapsing, and was largely financed by a synagogue building fund that had been saved up since 1845. In addition to the actual synagogue hall, the building also contained an apartment for the cantor , a classroom and a mikveh.

After the Israelite Congregation was dissolved in 1938, the synagogue was closed. On December 10, 1940, the community of Oedheim acquired the building. After the end of the war, the Israelitische Kultusvereinigung Württemberg applied for the restitution, whereupon the building came to the Jewish Restitution Successor Organization in August 1949 , which sold it to the state of Württemberg-Baden on March 21, 1952. In 1956 the land sold the building to private customers. In 1966 the former synagogue was converted into a two-family residence.
