history

An old synagogue in Massenbachhausen is documented as early as the 18th century. In 1826 the community built a small new synagogue at Seegraben (today: Gartenstrasse 3 ). The eastern half of the building contained a two-story synagogue hall with a women's gallery, and on the western side was a modest two-room apartment for the prayer leader . In 1832, Massenbachhausen became the seat of the Israelite religious community, which the Jewish community of Massenbach and the Jewish community of Bonfeld received as branches, but where there were separate synagogue rooms where services were held. Since there was a strong emigration and emigration of the Massenbachhausen Jews after 1850, the seat of the religious community was relocated to neighboring Massenbach in 1860 and the Massenbachhausen Synagogue was sold to private parties in 1872. The building was converted into a stable house, which resulted in numerous structural changes, including a. Walls were moved, a false ceiling was drawn in, a stable door was broken in and the like. In 1876 the future Franciscan Father Firminus Wickenhäuser was born in the building .

After more than 100 years of use as a residential building, the building was in dire need of renovation. It has been renovated for a long time (as of autumn 2009) and is to be transformed into a local museum . During the renovation in 2007, a building historical study was carried out by the monument office.
