The synagogue in Bad Rappenau in the district of Heilbronn in northern Baden-Württemberg was built in 1843/44 by the Jewish community of Bad Rappenau . The house was sold in 1937 in the course of the dissolution of the Jewish community, then converted into a milk collection point and later expanded into a residential building. Nothing on the building is reminiscent of its former use as a synagogue.

history

The poor Jewish community in Rappenau with only a few families held their services in a private house at the beginning of the 19th century. The desire for a synagogue failed in 1816 due to the lack of resources in the community. In 1843/44 the community was able to build a small synagogue in the Gewann Hinter dem Dorf (today: Am Schafgarten 2 ). The first plan for the building came from the carpenter Freudenberger, but was rejected by the Baden government for various reasons. The simple execution and the lack of mikveh (ritual bath) were criticized . The construction was then carried out for the construction costs of 1,300 guilders according to plans by Salinenbauinspektor Fritschi and probably also contained the mikveh that had been previously warned. After the size of the congregation had decreased from 81 people in 1875 to just ten people in 1933 as a result of emigration and emigration, services in the synagogue probably ended as early as the mid-1930s. When the community was finally completely dissolved in October 1937, the synagogue was also sold to the local milk cooperative, which converted the building into a milk collection point. The dairy house was closed in 1970 and sold to private customers. It was later converted into a residential building, whereby the structure, which was originally set back from the street, was extended to the edge of the road.

Remarks

  1. Angerbauer / Frank speak of a renovation , alemannia-judaica.de on the other hand describes a complete demolition , after which nothing was left of the outer walls.
