Former synagogue in Eppingen

The Metzgergasse synagogue at Metzgergasse 1 in Eppingen in the Heilbronn district in northern Baden-Württemberg is a former synagogue that was first mentioned in a file in 1749.

history

In the 18th century, the Jewish community of Eppingen held its services first in the Old University and then in the half-timbered house at Metzgergasse 1, which in the 19th century housed the Jewish butcher's shop on the ground floor and the Jewish elementary school on the first floor (from 1825 to 1868, then only religious school).

The synagogue was first mentioned in 1749 when it was recorded that someone had thrown a beating through the window. As was customary at the time, the synagogue was called the Jewish school .

In 1772 the Jewish community built a new synagogue at Küfergasse 2, which in turn was replaced by a new building at Kaiserstraße 6 in 1873 . Thus three synagogues in chronological order can be identified in Eppingen.

architecture

The traufständige half-timbered house in the Metzgergasse 1 was in 1601 as a craftsman - built and residential building. On the ground floor, made of local sandstone , there is an old slaughterhouse entrance and an arched window . The front door comes from the Biedermeier period . The first and second floors protrude, and the windows are profiled.
