Sorin Matei
Sorin Matei (born July 6, 1963 in Bucharest ) is a former Romanian high jumper .
Career
Matei took part in three Olympic Games ( 1980 in Moscow , 1988 in Seoul and 1992 in Barcelona ) as well as two outdoor world championships ( 1983 in Helsinki and 1987 in Rome ).
Matei was not necessarily considered a victory jumper at major international championships. His greatest success was winning the silver medal at the European Indoor Championships in Genoa in 1992 behind the Swede Patrik Sjöberg . Matei's outdoor best of 2.40 meters, set on June 20, 1990 in Bratislava , was a national record, as was his indoor record of 2.38 meters, which he set in 1995 in Wuppertal.
Matei is one of only nine athletes who have jumped eight feet in their outdoor career. With his best performance he ranks fifth on the all-time outdoor world best list, while his indoor best performance reaches from 2.38 m to 13th place on the indoor ranking list.
At a height of 1.84 m, his competition weight was 71 kg.
On April 26, 2007 Matei was elected to succeed Ilie Floroiu at the head of the Romanian Athletics Federation .
particularities
In contrast to many other - larger - world-class jumpers of his generation, Matei was characterized above all by a pronounced, bilateral use of the arms in the jump phase. He is known worldwide as the jumper who has jumped his height the highest.
