The 4th World Indoor Athletics Championships took place from March 12 to 14, 1993 in Toronto in the SkyDome .

These were the last championships where walking competitions were held. For the first time, the women's pentathlon and the men's heptathlon took place, albeit only as demonstration sports that did not count as official world championships.

Defending champion Lyudmila Naroshilenko was absent due to a doping ban. The favorite Freeman fell at the last hurdle and hindered Baumann, who had been leading until then. Graudyn crossed the finish line first in 8.02 s, but the Swiss protested and the race restarted without the disqualified Freeman.
