Violeta Szekely (born Beclea ; born March 26, 1965 in Dolheştii Mari , Suceava County ) is a former Romanian athlete .

The middle-distance runner took tenth place in the 1,500 meter run at the 1991 World Championships and ninth place at the 1993 World Championships . At indoor world championships in 1989 she achieved fourth place over 800 meters and second place each in 1991 over 800 meters and 1993 over 1500 meters. At the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona, ​​she was eliminated in the semifinals.

In 1995 Violeta Szekely was given a three-year ban for doping with anabolic steroids . After the end of this period, she won silver over 1500 meters at the 1999 World Indoor Championships and came fourth at the 1999 World Championships . The following year she won the gold medal at the European Athletics Indoor Championships in 2000 over the same distance . At the Olympic Games in Sydney in 2000 she won silver over 1500 meters behind the Algerian Nouria Mérah-Benida and in front of her compatriot Gabriela Szabo . The following year she won silver in the 1500 m at the 2001 World Indoor Championships and at the Edmonton World Championships .

Szekely was awarded the Order of Loyalty to the rank of knight in 2000.
