The 4th World Athletics Championships took place from August 13 to 22, 1993 in Stuttgart . The competitions were held in the Gottlieb Daimler Stadium (today's name Mercedes-Benz Arena ). 1689 athletes from 187 countries took part.

overview

With these World Championships, the cycle of events was changed from a four-year to a two-year cycle. For the first time, Germany hosted the World Athletics Championships. 16 years later, the World Championships in Berlin in 2009 saw the World Athletics Championships in Germany again.

Competitions

The women's triple jump has been added to the program .

However, there were still deficits in the offer catalog for women compared to the men's competitions.

  • Run area:
  • Walking area:
    • Instead of walking 20 km , the competition was held over a distance of ten kilometers. In 1999 the length of the route was increased to the 20 kilometers that have long been the norm for men.
    • The 50 km walk , which was part of the women's World Cup program in 2017, was missing .
  • In the jump area, one discipline was still missing in the women's program:
  • One discipline was also missing in the area of impact / throw:

Athletic performance

The fourth edition of the World Athletics Championships was also characterized by a high level of performance.

Most successful athlete

doping

There were four subsequently discovered doping cases with disqualifications of the athletes concerned:

Audience interest

The world championships were attended by a total of 585,000 spectators - the highest number of spectators ever achieved at the World Athletics Championships. The visitors to the world championships were awarded the UNESCO Fair Play Prize for “the great interest of the audience, the specialist knowledge and enthusiasm of the audience” . Not only the athletes from the host country were cheered on, as in many subsequent World Championships. Each starter earned respect and applause from the stands. La Ola walked through the rows of spectators countless times.

Others

The athletes' village was located in the recently vacated barracks Nellingen Barracks in Ostfildern . After the event, the area was rededicated as the new Scharnhauser Park district .

The world championships motivated VfB Stuttgart , based in the Gottlieb Daimler Stadium , to postpone most of its centenary celebrations in 1993 until the following year.
