history

Scharnhauser Park at the State Garden Show 2002

The 140 hectare part of the city takes its name from the former stud park of the Royal Private Stud Scharnhausen founded by King Wilhelm I of Württemberg in 1817. The Nellingen Barracks, a US Army barracks , was previously located on the site from 1951 to 1992 . Thereafter, the site was used as accommodation during the 1993 World Athletics Championships . Since then, the high-altitude area has been built as a model city district - for this, the city of Ostfildern and the planners Alban Janson and Sophie Wolfrum were awarded the German Urban Development Prize in 2006 . The core of their development concept was a landscape staircase running through the area from north-west to south-east to connect the various parts of the settlement. The Scharnhauser Park has been an independent district of Ostfildern since 2006.

In 2002 Ostfildern hosted the Baden-Württemberg State Garden Show , which took place in Scharnhauser Park. The Flammende Sterne fireworks festival has been held here every year since 2003 .

The model estate is designed for 9,000 residents and 2,500 jobs, of which around two thirds have been implemented at the beginning of 2010. The connecting link and a landmark that is easily recognizable from the air is the one kilometer long and 30 meter wide “landscape staircase”, which slopes slightly to the south.
