Gert Weil

Gert Michel Weil Wiesenborn (born January 3, 1960 in Puerto Montt ) is a former Chilean athlete who reached the final battle in the shot put at all major championships . He won twice at the Pan American Games and eight times at the South American Championships .

Career

Weil won his first title at the South American Championships in 1979 with 16.42 meters. In 1981 and 1983 he successfully defended his title. At the Pan American Games in 1983, he hit the ball to 17.30 meters and finished second behind the Cuban Luis Delís . At the Olympic Games in 1984 he reached tenth place with 18.69 meters after he had pushed 19.94 meters in qualifying.

At the Indoor World Games in 1985 , he reached seventh place with 19.47 meters. Outdoors, he hit a new championship record at the 1985 South American Championships with 20.14 meters and won by over three meters. In 1987 he won both the South American Championships and the Pan American Games, in the latter he had with 20.21 meters four centimeters ahead of the American Gregg Tafralis . At the Olympic Games in 1988 , he finished sixth with 20.38 meters.

Weil also achieved sixth place at the 1989 World Indoor Championships . Weil threw his only medal in the discus at the South American Championships in 1989 , for 52.36 meters he received the bronze medal, while he won his sixth title in a row in the shot put. In 1991 he repeated his sixth place from 1989 at the World Indoor Championships , at the South American Championships in 1991 he won for the seventh time in a row. With 19.47 meters, he also defended his title at the Pan American Games. At the 1991 World Championships , he reached ninth place. In the following year, Weil narrowly missed the finals as 13th in qualifying at the 1992 Olympic Games .

In 1993 he achieved his best result at world championships with sixth place at the world championships in Stuttgart . In 1995 Weil won after the break in 1993 again at the South American Championships , at the Pan American Games he received the bronze medal behind the American Cottrell J. Hunter and the Cuban Jorge Montenegro .

Weil's best performance with the ball is 20.90 meters from 1985, in 1987 he threw the discus at 55.98 meters. The shot put performance was exceeded in 2004 by Marco Antonio Verni as a South American record and a Chilean national record with 21.14 meters. With a height of 1.97 meters, Weil's competition weight was 122 kilograms. Weil is married to the Colombian sprinter Ximena Restrepo .
