Germán Luján Lauro (born April 2, 1984 in Trenque Lauquen ) is an Argentine athlete who competes in discus and shot put .

Athletic career

Germán Lauro gained his first international experience in 2000 when he won the gold medal at the South American Youth Championships in Bogotá in the shot put with the 5 kg ball with 17.77 m, as well as in the discus throw with a distance of 53.99 m. The following year he won the Junior South American Championships in Santa Fe with 51.68 m in the discus throw and then won the silver medal at the Pan American Junior Championships there with 50.14 m. He then took part in the Youth World Championships in Debrecen and reached twelfth place in the discus throw with 51.61 m. In 2002 he retired at the Junior World Championships in Kingston with 53.69 m in qualification and then won the silver medal in the shot put with 17.56 m and also with 52.44 m at the Junior South American Championships , which were held in the course of the South American Games in Belém the silver medal in the discus competition. At the Junior South American Championships 2003 in Guayaquil he won the bronze medal in the discus throw with 56.08 m and finished fourth in the shot put with 17.63 m.

In 2004 he won the bronze medal in the discus throw at the U23 South American Championships held for the first time in Barquisimeto with 50.56 m and was fourth in the shot put with 16.49 m. The following year he took part in the South American Championships in Cali for the first time , where he finished fourth in the shot put with 17.96 m. Also at the Ibero-American Championships 2006 in Ponce he was fourth with 18.47 m, but then won the gold medal in the shot put at the South American Championships in Tunja with 18.97 m and failed to make a valid attempt with the discus. He then won the U23 South American Championships , which were held in the course of the South American Games in Buenos Aires with a new national record of 19.78 m in the shot put and 57.71 m in the discus throw. In 2007 he defended his shot put title at the South American Championships in São Paulo with 19.65 m and this time also won the discus competition with 57.12 m. He then took part in the Pan-American Games in Rio de Janeiro for the first time , where he finished fifth and fourth with 19.49 m and 56.08 m. He also took part in the shot put at the World Championships in Osaka , but was eliminated there with 19.19 m in qualification.

In 2008 he won the bronze medal in the shot put at the Ibero-American Championships in Iquique with 19.02 m behind the Spaniard Borja Vivas and Reynaldo Proenza from Cuba and was fourth with the discus with 56.53 m. In the shot put, he also qualified for the first time for the Olympic Games in Beijing , where he did not reach the final with 19.07 m . The following year he won the South American Championships in Lima again with 19.20 m in the shot put and with 60.41 m in the discus throw. He then retired at the World Championships in Berlin with 57.88 m in the discus throw in qualification and failed to make a valid attempt in the shot put. At the Ibero-American Championships 2010 in San Fernando he won the silver medal in the shot put behind the Portuguese Marco Fortes with a new personal best of 20.43 m and finished fourth in the discus throw with 59.66 m. In 2011 he won the shot put at the South American Championships in Buenos Aires with 19.61 m and won the silver medal behind Brazilian Ronald Julião with the discus with a width of 59.98 m . He then retired at the World Championships in Daegu with 19.50 m in qualification and then won the bronze medal at the Pan American Games in Guadalajara with 20.41 m behind Canadians Dylan Armstrong and Carlos Véliz from Cuba.

In 2012 he took sixth place in the shot put at the World Indoor Championships in Istanbul with 20.38 m and then won the Ibero-American Championships in Barquisimeto with 20.13 m in the shot put and with a best performance of 63.55 m in the discus competition. In both disciplines he then took part in the Olympic Games in London , where he made it to the final in the shot put , where he finished sixth with a new national record of 20.84 m. In the discus competition, however, he was eliminated with 57.54 m in the qualification . In May he hit the ball to 21.26 m at the Diamond League meeting, setting a new South American record. The following year he won the South American Championships in Cartagena with a new championship record of 20.87 m in the shot put and with 60.45 m in the discus throw. Then he reached seventh place at the World Championships in Moscow with a push of 20.40 m. In 2014 he set a new indoor South American record in the shot put in Prague with 21.04 m, and shortly afterwards he finished sixth at the World Indoor Championships in Sopot with 20.50 m. He then won the South American Games in Santiago de Chile with a new player record of 20.70 m in the shot put and won the bronze medal in the discus competition with 58.36 m behind the Colombian Mauricio Ortega and the Brazilian Julião. He then won the Ibero-American Championships in São Paulo with 20.14 m in the shot put and with 61.62 m in the discus throw.

In 2015 he won the South American Championships in Lima with 20.77 m for the sixth time in a row in the shot put and then won the bronze medal at the Pan American Games in Toronto with 20.24 m behind the Jamaican O'Dayne Richards and Tim Nedow from Canada. He then reached the finals at the World Championships in Beijing , where he finished ninth with 19.70 m. The following year he finished sixth at the World Indoor Championships in Portland with 20.24 m and was then fourth at the Ibero-American Championships in Rio de Janeiro with 18.95 m. In the shot put, he took part in the Olympic Games there for the third time , but was eliminated there with 19.89 m in qualification . In 2017 he won the silver medal in the discus throw behind the Colombian Ortega at the South American Championships in Luque with 61.70 m and secured the bronze medal behind the Brazilians Darlan Romani and Willian Dourado in the shot put with 19.91 m . Two years later he won the bronze medal in the shot put again behind Romani and Dourado at the South American Championships in Lima with 18.97 m.

In the years from 2005 to 2007, from 2009 to 2013 as well as 2016 and 2019, Lauro was the Argentine champion in the shot put and in 2007, from 2009 to 2013 and 2019 also in the discus throw.
