final

August 23, 2015, 7:30 p.m. local time (1:30 p.m. CEST )

Since 2011, the German David Storl had won almost all major international titles. He was world champion in 2011 and 2013 and European champion in 2012 and 2014 . He only had to be content with silver at the 2012 Olympic Games . He was one of the big favorites here too. But his competition was tough. There were the three Americans Reese Hoffa - Olympic third in 2012 and fourth in the World Cup in 2011 and 2013, Christian Cantwell - third in the World Cup in 2013 and Olympic advanced in 2012 - as well as Joa Kovacs, who was very impressive this year with his widths. Olympic champion Tomasz Majewski from Poland - also European champion from 2010 and European championship third from 2012 - was also to be expected. The Canadian fifth in the Olympics and third in the 2013 World Cup, Dylan Armstrong, was not at the start.

The competition took a high-class course from the start. With his first shot of 21.23 m, Kovacs took the lead. In the second round Storl countered with 21.46 m and was initially at the front. In lap three O'Dayne Richards reached 21.69 m, which he now surprisingly took the lead. He had broken a Jamaican national record.

In the first final round of the best eight shot putters, New Zealander Thomas Walsh rose to 21.58 m - that was a new Oceania record - and was briefly second behind Richards. But Kovacs hit 21.67 m and regained silver. There were only 23 centimeters between Storl in fourth place and the leading Richards, nothing was decided yet. The order changed again on lap five. First, Storl achieved 21.75 m and was first. But Kovacs rose to 21.93 m and displaced the German again from the top position. It stayed that way, nothing changed in the front ranks in the last round.

Joe Kovacs was the new world champion, David Storl took second place ahead of O'Dayne Richards. Thomas Walsh in fourth place was eleven centimeters short of the bronze medal. Reese Hoffa was fifth with exactly 21.00 m ahead of Tomasz Majewski.
