doping

There was also a doping case at this middle distance : In July 2016, the IAAF announced that the Moroccan Yassine Bensghir, who had been eliminated in the semifinals, was banned for four years due to irregularities in his biological passport. His results, achieved since July 7, 2014, have been canceled and the suspension ends on April 11, 2020.

Bensghir was eliminated in the semi-finals, so there were no disadvantaged athletes who would have received their medal later. But there was a distortion of competition in the preliminary round. The Australian Ryan Gregson would have qualified for the semifinals through sixth place in his preliminary run. This was denied him by Bensghir's doping fraud.

The Australian Ryan Gregson would actually have been eligible for the semifinals through his placement, only the Moroccan Yassine Bensghir, who was later disqualified for doping reasons, prevented this

Prelims

From the three preliminary heats, the first six of each run - highlighted in light blue - and the six fastest runners - highlighted in light green - qualified for the semi-finals.

final

August 30, 2015, 7:45 pm local time (1:45 pm CEST )

With the Kenyan Asbel Kiprop, the US-American Matthew Centrowitz and the South African Johan Cronje, the first three of the last World Championships were there again. However, Cronje was already eliminated in the semifinals and Centrowitz was no longer as strong as two years ago. In contrast, defending champion Kiprop was one of the top favorites again in Beijing . His three compatriots Elijah Manangoi, Silas Kiplagat and Timothy Cheruiyot as well as the Moroccan Olympic third-placed Abdalaati Iguider were also rated highly.

The racing pace wasn't particularly fast at first. The two Kenyans Manangoi and Cheruiyot led the field. The first lap was covered in 59.14 s, the second in 59.48 s. Now it got a little faster, Centrowitz orientated himself directly behind the two leading Kenyans. When the bell rang for the last lap, the pace increased significantly. Centrowitz now took the lead, followed by Kiplagat and Iguider. The third lap was run in 57.01 s.

On the back straight, the Algerian Taoufik Makhloufi stormed forward. Iguider was second, Kiplagat third. From midfield, Kiprop came up to the three leaders. A small gap opened up behind it. In the target curve, the defending champion took third position. Makhloufi was further ahead on the home stretch. But fifty meters from the finish, Kiprop and then Iguider passed him. In the last few meters Manangoi flew up again. Asbel Kiprop was unbeatable and became world champion again. Second place went to Elijah Motonei Manangoi and thus ensured a Kenyan one-two. The bronze medal was won by Abdalaati Iguider just ahead of Taoufik Makhloufi and Silas Kiplagat.
