There were primarily two favorites for the hammer throw . The world champion in 2013 and European Vice Champion of 2014 Paweł Fajdek from Poland and the Olympic champion in 2012 , European champions in 2012 /2014, runner-up in 2011 /2013 Krisztián Pars of Hungary appeared with best titles prospects in Beijing on. Other favorites included the 2013 World Cup fifth, Dilschod Nasarow from Tajikistan, and the Russian European Championship third Sergei Litvinow Jr. and the Slovak EC seventh / WM eighth from 2013 Marcel Lomnický. The Czech World Cup third in 2013 and Olympic sixth in 2012 Lukáš Melich had already been eliminated in the qualification.

At first the great expanses were a long time coming. In the first two rounds there were only two throws over the 77-meter mark by Nazarow and Litvinov. In lap three Fajdek scored 80.64 m and took the lead very clearly. Behind it there were changes in position, but the distances were still limited, no athlete threw more than 78 meters. Nasarow was second with 77.61 m, Pars followed with 77.32 m in front of Litwinow - 77.24 m - and Poland's Wojciech Nowicki - 77.20 m.

In the first round of the top eight, Fajdek climbed again to 80.88 m. Nasarow consolidated position two with 78.06 m and improved this distance on lap five to 78.55 m. Before the final round, Pars maintained his bronze medal ahead of Litvinov and Nowicki. With his last throw at 78.55 m Wojciech Nowicki then surpassed Krisztián Pars and Sergei Litwinow. He drew level with Dilschod Nazarow, who however had the second best litter on his account and thus won the silver medal.
