final

August 30, 2015, 7:15 p.m. local time (1:15 p.m. CEST )

The strong Ethiopians Meseret Defar and Tirunesh Dibaba , winners of many great races in recent years, were no longer there. But the next generation also had a lot to offer, the top runners mostly still came from African countries or were native Africans. The favorites were the Ethiopian World Cup third Almaz Ayana, her compatriot Genzebe Dibaba - here already world champion over 1500 meters , the Kenyan vice world champion Mercy Cherono and her compatriot Viola Jelagat Kibiwot as World Cup fourth and Olympic fifth . The Dutch European Championship third Susan Kuijken had to be counted at least among the runners with outsider chances .

The field covered the first two kilometers with the Japanese Misaki Onishi and Ayuko Suzuki in the lead. The pace wasn't too fast, but then Ayana took the initiative and accelerated significantly. Dibaba and Cherono stayed on her heels while all other competitors had to let go. The field now fell apart completely into individual runners or smaller groups. Ayana kept the pace up, but Kibiwot and the Ethiopian Senbere Teferi fought their way back to the three leaders, so that now a group of five was in front. After a little more than three kilometers, this group also fell apart again. The further leading Ayana and Dibaba developed an increasing lead over the group of three behind them with Teferi, Kibiwot and Cherono.

With three laps to go, Ayana shook off her last remaining opponent, Dibaba, and continued to increase her lead over everyone else. In the chasing group, Cherono also had to tear down. Dibaba's lead over Teferi and Kibiwot visibly melted. Finally, Teferi, Kibiwot and Dibaba formed a group of three, in which it was silver and bronze. Almaz Ayana ran a lonely race far up front and won this competition by more than seventeen seconds. In 14: 26.83 min she undercut the championship record of the Ethiopian world record holder Tirunesh Dibaba by more than eleven seconds. Senbere Teferi won the sprint for the silver medal. On the home stretch it was caught by the 1500 meter world champion Genzebe Dibaba. So there was a threefold Ethiopian success. Viola Kibiwot had to admit defeat to the superiority of the Ethiopians and came fourth. Well behind here, with Mercy Cherono, Janet Kisa and Irene Cheptai, three other Kenyans finished five to seven. In eighth place, the Dutchwoman Susan Kuijken - today's Susan Krumins - crossed the finish line as the best non-African.
