Mercy Cherono , full name Mercy Cherono Koech (born May 7, 1991 in Kericho / Kericho County ), is a Kenyan long-distance runner . Her younger sister Caroline Chepkoech Kipkirui is also a cross-country skier.

In 2007 she became youth world champion in the 3000 meter run in Ostrava . At the World Junior Athletics Championships in 2008 in Bydgoszcz, she also won the title over the same distance. In 2009 she took second place in the individual and team rankings in the women's junior race at the World Cross Country Championships in Amman . In the same year she was in Bambous junior African champion over 3000 m and second in the 5000 meter run .

At the 2010 Cross Country World Championships in Bydgoszcz, she won the individual title in the junior women's race and led the Kenyan team to victory in the national ranking. In the same year she won the gold medal in the 3000-meter run and the silver medal in the 5000 meters at the Junior World Championships in Athletics in Moncton .

At the African Cross Country Championships 2011 in Cape Town, Cherono won the women's race. In the same year she was fifth over 5000 m at the World Championships in Moscow .

In 2013 she was runner-up in the world championship over 5000 m in Moscow with a time of 14: 51.22 minutes. The Commonweath games in 2014 in the Scottish Glasgow she won the 5000 meters in 15: 07.21 minutes.

In 2015 she was fifth in the 5000 m at the World Athletics Championships in Beijing.

In the Olympic Stadium in Rome (Stadio Olimpico di Roma) Cherono ran a personal best over 5000 meters on June 2, 2016 with 14: 33.95 min. At the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro she was fourth over 5000 m in a time of 14: 42.89 min.
