The 14th World Athletics Championships took place from August 10th to 18th, 2013 in the Luzhniki Olympic Stadium in Moscow .
canditature
By December 1, 2006, in addition to Moscow, Barcelona in Spain , Brisbane in Australia and Gothenburg in Sweden had applied to host the World Cup. Göteborg withdrew its candidacy later that month due to a lack of financial support from the Swedish government.
The World Athletics Federation (IAAF) announced during its general meeting on March 27, 2007 in Mombasa that Moscow had won the election to host the 2013 World Championships. This decision was repeatedly criticized by some Western TV commentators, athletes and newspapers during the event, as the stadium was said to have been sparsely attended. Even during the 100 meter final with Usain Bolt , many places remained vacant. This was justified with the low interest of the Russians in athletics compared to, for example, football . Contrary to these media reports, according to the IAAF , the World Championships achieved "excellent visitor numbers" and exceeded the previous record at the World Athletics Championships in Daegu in 2011.

Athletic performance
Although there was no world record , the performance of these world championships was consistently very high. There were three world championship records, eight world annual highs and fourteen national records.
The most successful athletes were two Jamaican sprinters : Usain Bolt and Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce won three gold medals with their victories over 100 meters , 200 meters and in the 4 x 100 meter relay . The Brit Mo Farah - 5000 and 10,000 meters and the American LaShawn Merritt - recorded double victories - 400 meters and 4-by-400-meter relay .
Particularly strong performances showed u. a. the Irish walker Robert Heffernan with 3:37:56 min over the 50 km distance, the Ukrainian high jumper Bohdan Bondarenko m with 2.41, Teddy Tamgho of France with 18.04 meters in the triple jump , Ashton Eaton ( USA ) with 8809 Points in the decathlon and the Czech Zuzana Hejnová with 52.83 s over the 400 meter hurdles . Even Tatiana Lysenko performance with 78.80 meters in the hammer throw belongs in this list. However, it must be said here that Lyssenko has been convicted of the doping offense several times .
doping
Even before these world championships there was once again a scandal in terms of doping. Two top sprinters were convicted of taking prohibited substances and banned from the world championships. It was the US-American Tyson Gay , the main opponent of the exceptional sprint Usain Bolt , and Bolt's compatriot Asafa Powell . There were three other cases immediately before the start of the competitions:
- The Romanian marathon runner Simona Maxim was leaving the training camp in Snagov immediately before leaving for Moscow when doping testers arrived there. She was then deleted on August 8, 2013 by the Romanian Athletics Federation from the World Cup squad.
- The two sprinters Kelly-Ann Baptiste and Semoy Hackett from Trinidad and Tobago left Moscow before the competition after they had tested positive in doping tests, according to media reports.
Immediately after the World Championships, seven further doping cases were reported:
- Roman Avramenko Ukraine , 5th place in the javelin throw - doped with the drug Oral-Turinabol
- The other affected athletes were not among the top athletes. There were u. a. Massoud Azizi , sprinter from Afghanistan ( Nandrolon ), Jeremias Saloj , Geher , from Guatemala ( EPO ) and four other people affected.
In 2016, an avalanche started when it became known that the Russian Sports Federation was responsible for concealing positive doping results at the 2013 World Athletics Championships. These and other insights into the role of this Russian ministry ultimately led to the exclusion of Russian athletes from the athletics competitions at the 2016 Olympic Games and the 2017 World Athletics Championships .
Six other athletes were stripped of their placements / medals from these world championships due to positive doping results. All of these athletes come from Russia:
- Olga Kutscherenko , long jump , originally 5th place
- Yevgenia Kolodko , shot put , originally 5th place
- Antonina Kriwoschapka , 400-meter run and 4-by-400-meter relay , originally 3rd place over 400 meters and 1st place with the relay
- Ekaterina Scharmina , 1500 meter run , originally 6th place
- Anna Bulgakowa , hammer throw , originally 5th place
- Marija Sawinowa , 800-meter run , originally 2nd place
Another athlete joined in August 2017:
- Anna Pjatych , triple jump , originally 7th place
In 2019 there was a continuation of the subsequent disqualifications of doping offenders, in March a Russian walker was exposed:
- Alexandr Ivanov , 20 km walk , originally world champion. His world championship title was revoked after deviations in blood were detected, according to the Russian Athletics Association. All of his results between July 2012 and August 2015 have been canceled, including an EM silver medal from 2014 . It was also banned for three years retrospectively from May 2, 2017.
There were a total of 19 doping cases at these world championships. The two top sprinters from the USA and Jamaica, whose disqualification had already taken place in advance, were not counted. Here a doping swamp opened up, which put a heavy burden on athletics. Russia had by far the largest proportion of suspended athletes. The credibility of an entire sport suffers severely, as the second McLaren report again underscores significantly.
Criticism of homophobia
Because of the passing of the Russian law banning gay propaganda in public , there was international criticism and protests from journalists, politicians, LGBT and human rights activists at these world championships.
