Yoann Kowal (born May 28, 1987 in Nogent-le-Rotrou ) is a French medium-distance , long-distance and obstacle runner .

In 2009 he won bronze over 1500 m at the European Athletics Indoor Championships in Turin and was eliminated in the preliminary stages at the World Athletics Championships in Berlin . At the European Cross Country Championships in Dublin , he finished 75th.

The following year he was fifth over 1500 m at the European Athletics Championships in Barcelona in 2010 and seventh at the Athletics Continental Cup in Split .

In 2011 he failed over 1500 m at the European Indoor Championships in Paris in the preliminary stages and reached the semi-finals at the World Championships in Daegu .

In 2012 he was tenth at the World Indoor Athletics Championships in Istanbul over 3000 m and reached the semifinals at the Olympic Games in London over 1500 m.

The following year he was fourth over 3000 m at the European Indoor Championships 2013 in Gothenburg. Over 3000 m obstacle he was eighth at the World Championships in Moscow and won silver at the Francophonie Games .

In 2014 he was disqualified in the preliminary run over 3000 m at the World Indoor Championships in Sopot . At the European Championships in Zurich , he won gold over the 3000 m obstacle, benefiting from the fact that his compatriot Mahiedine Mekhissi was disqualified because he took off his T-shirt on the home straight.

In 2015 he did not get past the first round at the European Indoor Championships in Prague over 1500 m and at the World Championships in Beijing over 3000 m obstacle. At the European Championships in Amsterdam in 2016 , he won the bronze medal over this route. At the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro , he finished fifth.

He was twice French champion over 1500 m (2008, 2010) and over 3000 m obstacle (2014, 1015). In 2009 he was French cross-country champion, in 2014 French indoor champion over 1500 m.
