Mikhail Shelev

Mikhail Schelew (born July 15, 1943 ) is a former Bulgarian athlete . The 1.75 m tall and 63 kg heavy in his competition time, Schelew became European champion in the 3,000-meter obstacle course in 1969 .

Schelew appeared internationally for the first time at the European Championships in Budapest in 1966 , but was eliminated there in advance. At the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City , he reached the final. Behind the Russian Alexander Morosow in 5th place, Schelew was the second best European in sixth in 8: 58.41 minutes. A year later at the European Championships in Athens in 1969 , he managed the fastest run of his career. He won the title in 8: 25.0 minutes, 0.6 seconds ahead of Morosow. In 1971 in Helsinki he could not defend his title, but was eliminated in the run-up. At the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich he reached the final again, but was knocked off twelfth and last.

Schelew was in 1966, 1968-1970 and 1974 Bulgarian champion in the obstacle course. In 1968 he won the 10,000 meter title, in 1969 and 1970 he became the 5000 meter champion. From 1967 to 1971 he won the Balkan Games in the obstacle course five times in a row, in 1967 he also won the 10,000 meter run here, and in 1969 he won the 5000 meters.
