Complete medal table

The 8th European Athletics Championships took place from August 30 to September 4, 1966 in the Hungarian capital Budapest . With the exception of the marathon and the walking competitions , the competitions were held in the Népstadion .

Attendees

The participation of the GDR under its own flag was controversial until shortly before the start of the competitions. The German athletes were even urged by politicians from the Federal Republic of Germany to boycott the European championships. The chairman of the German Athletics Association Max Danz , however, held on to the participation of the athletes of his association. There should then be a boycott based on other constellations at the following European championships .

Competitions

There were no changes in the competition program at these European Championships.

Gender status problem area

There were discussions about the question of gender status: Are all women athletes who compete in women's competitions actually women? It had in the past v. a. there were doubts about two Soviet sportswomen, the extremely successful siblings Tamara and Irina Press . The two did not face the newly introduced so-called sex tests, so they did not take part in the European championships and from then on never appeared again in competitions.

With the extremely successful Polish Ewa Kłobukowska , another athlete was affected by these sex tests. She passed the test at these European Championships without any complaints, but was classified as a hermaphrodite in 1967 at the European Cup because of her sex chromosomes . As a result, she could no longer take part in competitions from then on. In 1969, the IAAF subsequently canceled all world records in which Ewa Kłobukowska was involved, but she was allowed to keep the titles she had won. To classify these facts, however, also includes the fact that the athlete concerned later married and gave birth to a son.

Athletic performance

When it first took part as its own association, the GDR became the most successful nation with eight EM titles. The Soviet Union had lost its sole supremacy in Europe in recent years. The GDR was followed by Poland with 7 European Championship titles, the USSR (6 titles) and France (4).

The performance level of the individual athletes was high. The European championship record has been improved eighteen times. However, this time there were no world and European records.

The scoring was based on the points table from 1964.

For orientation and classification of the performances, the scores achieved in 1985 according to the current rating system are also listed for comparison. After that, places two and three would have been assigned the other way around. But these comparisons are only indicative, because the different standards of the time must apply as a basis.

The pentathlon table, modified in 1962, was used for scoring.

For orientation and classification of the performances, the scores achieved for the heptathlon according to the current rating system from 1985 are listed for comparison . After that there would have been other placements:

  • The fifth-placed Annamária Tóth would have won bronze.
  • The third-placed Inge Exner would be fifth.
  • The ninth-placed Brit Ann Wilson would be eighth ahead of the tenth-placed Norwegian Oddrun Hokland.
  • Denise Guénard, who was eighth, would have to be content with tenth place.
  • The two athletes in 21st place (Marjana Lubej) and 22nd (Magaly Vettorazzo) should have swapped their ranks.

But these comparisons are only indicative, because the different standards of the time must apply as a basis.
