Dieter Hoffmann (athlete)
Dieter Hoffmann (born August 27, 1942 in Danzig ; † September 16, 2016 in Luckenwalde ) was a German athlete and Olympic participant who - starting for the GDR - was a successful shot putter in the 1960s and early 1970s . His greatest success was winning the European Championships in 1969 .
Life
Hoffmann took part in the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo and came in twelfth there. In 1965 he was the first GDR champion in the hall and took fourth place at the European Cup . The following year he was able to defend his championship title and won the silver medal at the first European Indoor Games in Dortmund. At the European Championships in Budapest he reached eighth place.
On July 3, 1968, Hoffmann hit the European record in Potsdam with a 20.08 meter record. Two weeks later in Sokolov he improved the European record by two centimeters. In August he won his only GDR championship title outdoors in Erfurt. Then at the Olympic Games in Mexico he reached fourth place.
In 1969 he won the gold medal at the European Championships in Athens in front of his teammates Heinz-Joachim Rothenburg and Hans-Peter Gies , for which he was awarded the Patriotic Order of Merit. This year he also set his personal best with 20.60 meters. At the European Championships in 1971 , he reached seventh place. After he finished fourth at the GDR championships in 1972, he missed participation in the Olympic Games in Munich.
Dieter Hoffmann belonged to the ASK Berlin and the ASK Potsdam . In his playing days he was 1.88 m tall and weighed 120 kg. In the documents on doping in the GDR that became public after the reunification , the name of Hoffmann was also found among the doped athletes.
