Complete medal table

The 9th European Athletics Championships took place from 16 to 21 September 1969 in Piraeus near Athens . With the exception of the marathon and walking competitions , the competitions were held at the Karaiskakis Stadium .

Competitions

There were 24 disciplines for men and 14 for women. New on the women's program were the 1500-meter run and the 4-by-400-meter relay . The distance of the women's hurdles has also been changed. The discipline was now held as a 100-meter hurdles instead of over 80 meters as before.

Attendees

More than 900 athletes from 29 countries had registered. The GDR team consisted of a total of 62 active players, 37 men and 25 women, who won the most European championship titles and were also ahead in the total number of medals.

Athletes from the Federal Republic of Germany did not start at these European championships, with the exception of the relay teams. The reason was the case of the middle and long-distance runner Jürgen May , who had fled the GDR and was not allowed to start because he had moved from the GDR to the Federal Republic less than three years ago. Formally, the change of association was decisive, even if the German team management under its chairman Max Danz took the position that May had changed within Germany. The active members of the German team voted and decided against the will of the team management for a boycott.

The scoring was based on the points table from 1964.

For orientation and classification of the performances, the scores achieved in 1985 according to the current rating system are also listed for comparison. But these comparisons are only indicative, because the different standards of the time must apply as a basis.

The points table from 1969 was used for scoring.

For orientation and classification of the performances, the scores achieved for the heptathlon according to the current rating system from 1985 are listed for comparison . But these comparisons are only indicative, because the different standards of the time must apply as a basis.
