Howard Payne

Howard Payne ( Andrew Howard Payne; born April 17, 1932 in Benoni , South Africa , † March 1, 1992 in Sheffield ) was a British hammer thrower .

In 1958 he was fourth in the hammer throw for Southern Rhodesia at the British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Cardiff . In the shot put , he finished eleventh in the discus throw , he came to 14th place.

From then on he limited himself to the hammer throw at international championships. In 1962 he won for England starting at the British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Perth , and in 1964 he was eliminated from the qualification at the Olympic Games in Tokyo .

He defended his title at the British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Kingston in 1966 , tenth at the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City and eighth at the 1969 European Athletics Championships in Athens.

In 1970 he won his third title in a row at the British Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh . At the European Championship in Helsinki in 1971 and the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich, he did not get beyond the preliminary round.

In 1974 he won silver at the British Commonwealth Games in Christchurch , but failed in qualifying at the European Championships in Rome .

He was English champion five times (1964, 1969–1971, 1973).

His marriage to discus thrower Rosemary Payne was divorced.
