The 10th European Athletics Championships took place from 10 to 15 August 1971 in Helsinki . With the exception of the marathon and the walking competitions , the competitions were held in the 1952 Olympic Stadium.

In that race there was an unfortunate incident that knocked out two of the favorites. Gunhild Hoffmeister initially fell, and world record holder Hildegard Falck subsequently also fell, so that both runners could not finish the race.

For orientation and classification of the performances, the scores achieved for the heptathlon according to the current rating system from 1985 are listed for comparison . After that, the eleventh and twelfth placed as well as fourteenth and fifteenth should have swapped their positions.

But these comparisons are only indicative, because the different standards of the time must apply as a basis.
