The decathlon men at the 1971 European Athletics Championships was on 11 and 12 August 1971 at the Olympic Stadium of Helsinki held.

Defending champion Joachim Kirst from the GDR was European champion . The Swede Lennart Hedmark took second place . The West German Olympic third from 1964 and Olympic runner-up from 1968 Hans-Joachim Walde won the bronze medal.

values
: For orientation and classification of the performance, the points achieved in 1985 according to the current evaluation system are also listed. After that, there would only have been one change in the result: the athletes in ranks seventeen and eighteen would have had to swap places. But these comparisons are only indicative, because the different standards of the time must apply as a basis.
