The men's decathlon at the 1986 European Athletics Championships was held on August 27 and 28, 1986 in the Neckar Stadium in Stuttgart .

For the first time at the European Championships, the points were awarded according to the 1985 rating, which is still valid today.

In this competition, the decathletes from the Federal Republic of Germany won two medals, silver and bronze. European champion was the British title holder, Olympic champion in 1980 / 1984 , world champion in 1983 and world record holder Daley Thompson . Jürgen Hingsen , who has been second at all major international championships since 1982 , also won the silver medal here. Bronze went to Siegfried Wentz, third in the World Cup in 1983 and third in the Olympic Games in 1984 .
