The men's decathlon at the 1998 European Athletics Championships was held on August 19 and 20, 1998 in the Népstadion in the Hungarian capital, Budapest .
European champion was the Estonian Erki Nool . He won ahead of two-time Finnish runner-up ( 1995 / 1997 ) Eduard Hämäläinen . As in 1994, bronze went to the Russian Lev Lobodin .

execution
The decathlon was carried out according to the same rules as today. The ten disciplines took place over two days.
- Day 1: August 19th - 100 m / long jump / shot put / high jump / 400 m
- Day 2: August 20th - 110 m hurdles / discus throw / pole vault / javelin throw / 1500 m
The rating was based on the 1985 point table, which is still valid today.
