The shot put women at the 1998 European Athletics Championships was on 18 and 20 August 1998 Népstadion the Hungarian capital Budapest discharged.

The Ukrainian defending champion and vice world champion in 1997 Wita Pavlysch became European champion . She won ahead of the Russian Irina Korschanenko . Bronze went to Janina Karoltschyk from Belarus .

European champion Wita Pawlysch improved the existing EM record in the final on August 20 by ten centimeters to 21.69 m. UkraineUkraine 

qualification

Eighteen participants competed in two groups for the qualifying round. The qualification distance for the direct entry into the final was 18.00 m. Ten athletes exceeded this mark (highlighted in light blue). The final field was filled with the two next-placed athletes to twelve shot putters (highlighted in light green). So finally 17.68 m had to be achieved to take part in the finals.
