European champion Stefano Baldini from Italy

The men's marathon at the 1998 European Athletics Championships took place in Budapest , Hungary on August 22, 1998 .

There was a three-way victory for Italy. Stefano Baldini won the race in 2:12:01 h. Vice European Champion was Danilo Goffi ahead of Vincenzo Modica .

As in 1994 , there was a team classification, the so-called Marathon Cup. For this, the times of the three best runners per nation were added up. However, the evaluation was not part of the official medal table. The team from Italy won ahead of Spain and Portugal.
