The men's 400-meter run at the 1998 European Athletics Championships was held from August 19 to 21, 1998 in the Népstadion in the Hungarian capital, Budapest .
The British runners won two gold and bronze medals in this competition. Iwan Thomas became European champion . The Pole Robert Maćkowiak won silver. Mark Richardson was third.
