The men's 400-meter run at the 2016 European Athletics Championships was held from July 6th to 8th, 2016 in the Olympic Stadium in the Dutch capital, Amsterdam .
British defending champion Martyn Rooney became European champion . Second place went to the Czech Pavel Maslák . Bronze went to Liemarvin Bonevacia from the Netherlands .

For this discipline, a new competition mode was used for the first time. The nine strongest athletes on the European annual best list did not have to compete in the preliminary round, but only entered the semi-finals.

The preliminary round was carried out in three runs. The first four athletes per run - highlighted in light blue - as well as the three fastest runners - highlighted in light green - qualified for the semi-finals.
