Martyn Rooney (born April 3, 1987 in London ) is a British sprinter who specializes in the 400-meter run .

Athletic career

At the Junior European Championships in 2005 he won gold in the relay and silver in the individual. At the World Championships this year he was only used in the relay with which he finished fourth. Starting for England , he finished fifth at the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne. He broke Roger Black's 20-year-old British junior record with his time of 45.51 seconds . In the same year he won the bronze medal at the Junior World Championships in both the individual competition and the 4-by-400-meter relay .

At the 2007 World Championships in Osaka , he was eliminated in the preliminary stages and finished sixth in the relay. At the Olympic Games in Beijing , he ran in the semifinals with 44.60 seconds, the fastest time in all qualifying runs; in the final he was sixth with 45.12 seconds. With the 4 x 400 meter relay, he took fourth place.

At the 2009 World Championships in Berlin , he was eliminated over 400 meters in the semifinals and won silver with the relay. A year later at the European Championships in Barcelona he won bronze over 400 meters and again silver with the relay. At the 2011 World Championships , Rooney did not reach the final in the individual run, with the season he was seventh.

In 2012, Rooney reached sixth place in the 400-meter run at the Olympic Games in his native London and fourth place with the British relay. At the 2014 European Championships in Zurich , he won the gold medal in the 400-meter run. In 2015 he won the bronze medal at the World Championships in Beijing with his country's 4 x 400 meter relay. He defended his title at the 2016 European Championships in Amsterdam .

Martyn Rooney is 1.98 m tall and weighs 78 kg. He lives in Loughborough where he studies sports science and management. Rooney starts for the Croydon Harriers .
