Karl Honz

Karl Honz (born January 28, 1951 in Bankholzen ) is a former German athlete and Olympian who was successful in the 400-meter run in the first half of the 1970s .

In 1971 he went to the European Championships in Helsinki in the 200-meter run , but did not get past the run.

In the following years he was twice German champion over 400 meters, in 1972 with 44.70 seconds (European record) ahead of Bernd Herrmann and Hermann Köhler and in 1972 with 45.60 seconds ahead of Horst-Rüdiger Schlöske and Hermann Köhler. This was followed by a second place behind Herrmann and before Schlöske in 1974 and a third place behind Herrmann and Schlöske in 1975. In 1973 and 1974 he won the German championships over 4 x 400 meters with the VfB Stuttgart team . In 1975 Honz became German indoor champion with the 4 x 400 meter relay.

Karl Honz took part in the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich . He reached the final over 400 meters, where he finished seventh in 45.68 s. With the 4 x 400 meter relay (team: Herrmann, Schlöske, Köhler, Honz) he reached fourth place in 3: 00.88 minutes.

He achieved his greatest successes at European championships. With the 4 x 400 meter relay, he won silver at the European Indoor Championships in 1973 in Rotterdam and gold in 1975 in Katowice . At the European Open Air Championships in Rome in 1974 , he won two medals: gold over 400 meters in 45.04 s ahead of David Jenkins ( GB ) and Bernd Herrmann and silver with the 4 x 400 meter relay (team: Köhler, Schlöske, Honz and Ziegler) in 3: 03.52 minutes behind Great Britain and ahead of France .

With his personal best of 44.70 s, he was second in the world best list in 1972. Today he ranks fourth on Germany's all-time best list.

For his sporting success he received the silver laurel leaf from Federal President Walter Scheel .

As an active athlete, Karl Honz had a competition weight of 83 kg with a height of 1.88 m.
