Matthew Hudson-Smith (born October 26, 1994 in Wolverhampton ) is a British athlete who specializes in the 400-meter run .

Athletic career

At the beginning of his career, Hudson-Smith initially concentrated on the 200-meter run , although his trainer Tony Hadley attested him to be more talented in the 400-meter run early on. At the Junior European Championships in Rieti in 2013 , he finished third over 200 meters and also won another bronze medal with the British 4 x 400 meter relay .

His breakthrough in the 400-meter distance came in July 2014 when he undercut the 45-second mark for the first time at the Diamond League meeting in Glasgow with a time of 44.97 seconds. Three weeks later he led the English 4 x 400 meter relay in the same place as the final runner to victory at the Commonwealth Games . Shortly afterwards he won the British relay at the European Championships in Zurich . He also won the silver medal in the 400-meter run behind his compatriot Martyn Rooney in a new personal best of 44.75 seconds . At the 2016 European Championships in Amsterdam , he won the bronze medal with the British relay.

Hudson-Smith is studying sports science at the University of Worcester .
