Complete medal table

The 17th European Athletics Championships took place from August 18 to 23, 1998 in Budapest . The competitions were held in the Népstadion , where the European Championships in 1966 had already taken place. The stadium had been renovated for the new occasion. 1330 athletes from 44 countries took part.

Competitions

The women's competition program has been expanded to include two disciplines. There was also the pole vault and the hammer throw . So the jumping and throwing competitions - apart from the different weights of the throwing devices - were now identical for women and men. In addition, the 3,000-meter run for women has been replaced by the 5,000-meter run . The lengths of the runs in the running competitions were now identical for women and men. For women, however, the 3000-meter obstacle course that was part of the European Championship program in 2006 was still missing .

doping

There was a doping case at these European championships:

  • Dana Cervantes , pole vault (initially eleventh) - She has been proven to have violated the doping rules. The disqualification ensued and the athletes ranked after her moved one place forward.

Athletic performance

This time, Great Britain was at the top of the nations with nine European Championship titles. Germany followed with eight gold medals, followed by Russia with six.

The following successes are particularly noteworthy for the individual athletes.
